Kathryn Nettleman

Kathryn Nettleman is grateful and happy to have a career playing classical music. Currently residing outside of Chicago, Ms. Nettleman performs regularly as a substitute/ extra with such ensembles as the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Minnesota Orchestra, Milwaukee Symphony, Saint Louis Symphony, and Lyric Opera of Chicago. She serves as Principal Bass with the Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra and Assistant Principal Bass of the Elgin Symphony Orchestra, and is a regular member of the bass sections of the Chicago Philharmonic and Ravinia Festival Orchestras.

Originally from Haddon Township, New Jersey, Ms. Nettleman’s interest in music stems from fourth grade violin studies as a public school student. By eighth grade, Kate was enticed by and began experimenting with playing the double bass, and has never since missed playing those high notes! While in high school, Ms. Nettleman participated in a wide variety of musical activities, most notably the Philadelphia Youth Orchestra, and she twice received the New Jersey Governor’s Award in Arts Education. She attended the Juilliard School as a student of the great bass teacher Homer Mensch, and spent one year of graduate study at the Yale University School of Music with bassist Donald Palma (of the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra); she was a full scholarship recipient at both schools. From 1999-2001, Kate continued her intensive musical studies as a member of the New World Symphony under the directorship of Michael Tilson Thomas. There she co-chaired a musician-run concert series and was awarded by her peers the NWS Musician of the Year Award for Artistic Leadership. Also during that time, she secured positions in the Bergen Philharmonic (Norway) and the Naples Philharmonic, and in the 2001-2002 season served as a member of the Naples Philharmonic bass section, on Florida’s beautiful Southwest coast.

Kate has been living in or near Chicago since the summer of 2002, and has enjoyed the diversity of music-making opportunities which a life based here affords. She performs orchestral, opera, chamber, and contemporary music throughout the region and is currently on faculty at the Merit School of Music. When not logging countless Midwestern miles en route to her next gig, Ms. Nettleman serves as a Friendly Visitor/ Telephone Pal to homebound senior citizens through the Resurrection Home Health Care Volunteer Program. She enjoys vegetarian cooking and baking and is an avid fitness runner, having completed several marathons with a personal record of 4:05. Ms. Nettleman has not owned a television since 1999.
